Gerrit Thomas Rietveld

Among the most important architects of the twentieth century, Dutch architect Rietveld was inspired by the ideas developed by the compatriot painter Piet Mondrian and applied them to the three dimensions.
Rietveld studied the asymmetrical geometric offset and the search for formal dialogue between volumes and primary colors, according to the principles of the De Stijl movement - also known as Neo-Plasticism.
He worked intensively in the production of furniture and interior design,  influenced by Mondrian’s drawings.
Mainly active in the Netherlands, he designed, among many other works, the Schröder House in Utrecht in 1924, the “Row-Houses” in Utrecht in 1931-34, the Dutch pavilion at the Venice Biennale of 19534, the Rietveld Pavilion in the garden of the Kroller-Muller Museum in Otterloo in 1965 and the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam (opened in 1973).
